Apollo Hospital, Ahmedabad removed 47-kg tumor from a woman.
A 56-YEAR-OLD woman was discharged from Apollo Hospital in Ahmedabad on Monday, following the removal of a 47-kilogram tumor, which is claimed to be the “biggest non-ovarian tumor successfully removed in India so far”.

The woman is a resident of Devgadh Baria. who had the tumor for 18 years. She was bed ridden for several months and her condition  kept worsening.

A benign tumor was detected first in 2004 in her and the surgery was opted for. The surgery began, it was found that the tumor was attached to several internal organs and the procedure was not completed that time considering the risks involved.

The Surgery was finally carried out in the Apollo Hospital Ahmedabad on January 27. The patient was discharged following post-operative care and rehabilitation on February 14. The patient weighed 49 kg post her surgery.

The operation was carried out by a team of eight doctors of Apollo Hospitals in Ahmedabad, including four surgeons, led by chief surgical gastroenterologist Dr Chirag Desai.  The team also comprised of General Surgeon Dr Swati Upadhyay,  Anesthetist Dr Ankit Chauhan, and critical care specialist Dr Jay Kothari.

It was a high-risk surgery as the woman’s internal organs such as fiver, heart, lungs, kidneys and uterus were displaced because of the pressure created by the tumor in the stomach wall. The post image is showing the patient in the Center with members of the medical team.
